Sleeker, smarter, and significantly easier to clean — the Pax 2 vaporizer takes everything the original Pax lacked and upgrades it with precision. With an ultra-quick heat-up time, noticeably improved battery life, and a compact, featherlight build, it sets a new standard in the portable vape category. If you found the first generation promising but imperfect, this Pax 2 review will show you exactly how the sequel corrects its predecessor’s missteps — and then some.
The original Pax by Ploom was a bold first step into the world of sleek, portable vaporizers — but as months passed, its shortcomings became harder to ignore. From a finicky mouthpiece to frustrating maintenance, the initial design left much to be desired. Thankfully, the Pax 2 is a complete reimagining. It feels less like a sequel and more like the refined vision the engineers had all along.
Pax 2 won’t rip bong-sized hits like the Mighty or Crafty, but its tiny package and no moving parts make it a very streamlined and easy to use option that’s basically foolproof.
So, what’s actually better in Pax 2?
- No More Sticky Mouthpiece: The retractable, failure-prone mouthpiece of the original is gone. Pax 2 introduces a minimalist, flush mouthpiece that’s far more reliable and user-friendly.
- Cleaning Is a Breeze: Thoughtful internal redesigns make buildup and residue less of a problem — and routine cleaning is no longer a dreaded chore.
- Bigger Oven, Better Sessions: A noticeably larger oven chamber lets you pack more herb for longer, smoother sessions.
- Longer Battery Life: The upgraded battery gives you multiple sessions on a single charge — no more mid-day power anxiety.
- Smaller, Lighter, Smarter: Pax 2 is more compact and ergonomic, yet it feels more premium in hand. The on/off mechanism is streamlined and intuitive, making it ideal for quick, discreet use.
Speed That Impresses — Even Among Giants

After six months of regular use, one thing’s for sure: Pax 2 doesn’t waste your time. From cold start to full operating temperature, it’s ready in just 45 seconds. That’s faster than many top-tier vaporizers — including the likes of Mighty or Crafty — and fast enough that you’ll want to pre-pack before turning it on. It heats so quickly that by the time you’re halfway through filling the oven, it’s already ready to go.
This kind of responsiveness makes Pax 2 perfect for those looking for quick relief or a session on-the-go without compromising on quality or vapor production.
The Good…
-
Heats up fast — ready to go in about 45 seconds
-
Offers four temperature settings for a flexible vaping experience
-
Solid battery life — handles around four sessions per charge
-
Simple to use and surprisingly easy to clean
-
Smart refinements across the board — this is a thoughtful, worthwhile upgrade
And the Not-So-Good…
-
The charging dock leaves much to be desired
-
Requires occasional light cleaning (but it pays off in performance)
-
Designed more for smooth sips — don’t expect massive clouds like you’d get from the Mighty or Crafty

How to Use Pax 2
Pax 2 is sleek and easy to hold.
Under the mouth piece is the vapor path hole.
The mouthpiece has two small pathways for air. Easy cleaning with just a rub of alcohol.
Open Pax 2 from the bottom and just push on one side to pop the magnetic bottom off.
The oven is deep but small compared to Crafty or Pax 1.
Fill the oven just about to the line. This bowl is fairly full.
Take slow sips and gently inhale a steady stream of air through the mouth piece hole. Long, slow sips work well.
Repeat until cached and be aware on lower temp settings you will likely need to stir the bowl once or twice.
Done and toasted to a nice light brown. This was on the 2nd highest temperature so there’s some room to go.
Charging is annoying to line up the charger pins to the back of the Pax, or bump it off the charger.
How the Pax 2 Vaporizer Rated: 89%
Looking for something small and easy to use? Pax 2 is a solid choice. If you’re a heavy smoker looking for a medical-grade portable, you might be happier with the Crafty or Mighty.
Category | Rating | Description |
---|---|---|
Value | 9/10 | $280 is on the medium-high end for a portable, but this is also one of the fastest, smallest, and easiest to use portables. You pay a little extra for the smaller size, but you won't get huge clouds like the Crafty, Mighty, or a desktop unit. |
Ease of use | 10/10 | Fast warm-up, especially compared to the original Pax or Crafty. The single button interface is easy to use, though changing settings might feel a bit cryptic at first. However, once you’ve set your preferences, you don't need to fiddle with them often. |
Design | 9/10 | The Pax 2’s design is sleek, lightweight, and an improvement over the original Pax. The rubber mouthpiece is soft and easy to clean. However, the battery cover design could be better, as it tends to slip off easily. |
Durability | 9/10 | Despite a few drops and being kept in my pocket with keys and other items, the Pax 2 holds up remarkably well. It can endure a fair amount of abuse, making it a durable option for everyday use. |
Setup | 8/10 | It’s easy to turn on and operate with just one button. Once you’ve set the temperature, it’s a hassle-free experience. However, it does take a little longer to warm up compared to other portable vaporizers like the Crafty, which affected the rating. |
Loading | 9/10 | The magnetic back makes loading easy, but I often have to use a finger or tool to pack down the herb properly. This can be a little annoying, but once packed correctly, it works great. |
Hits | 7/10 | The Pax 2 delivers vapor in a strong yet subtle way. The hits are not huge, but they’re still impressive for such a compact device. You’ll get bigger hits compared to small devices like the Magic Flight, but it doesn’t compete with larger units like the Mighty or Crafty. |
Clean-up | 9/10 | Cleaning the Pax 2 is relatively simple. While the bowl can be a little tricky to empty when packed tightly, using a small tool like a screwdriver or toothpick helps. The vapor path needs occasional attention, but it's easy to manage with basic tools. |
Efficiency | 9/10 | Pax 2 is designed for efficiency. Its compact size and vapor path ensure minimal waste, allowing you to get the most out of each session. You’ll appreciate the consistent performance with every use. |
Maintenance | 10/10 | Maintenance is a breeze. The mouthpiece is much easier to clean compared to the original Pax. A quick wipe with ISO alcohol keeps it spotless, and after 10-20 uses, a simple pipe cleaner ensures the vapor path stays in top condition. |
The Downsides
While the Pax 2 impresses with its sleek and portable design, there are a few downsides to consider. One minor inconvenience is the charger connection, which can easily be bumped and disconnected. However, it’s worth noting the thoughtful design of the plug-free body, which ensures you don't have to deal with loose cables or cumbersome attachments.
The main drawback, though, is that if you’re expecting large, bong-like hits from such a compact device, you might want to look into the Crafty or Mighty vaporizers instead. These larger devices deliver much more substantial vapor production, which may be a better fit for those seeking massive clouds.
Maintenance
One of the standout features of the Pax 2 is its remarkably low-maintenance design. The device requires very little effort to keep in top condition. Simply wipe down the mouthpiece after every two uses to keep it clean and hygienic. After 10-20 sessions, you’ll want to use ISO alcohol and a pipe cleaner to clear out the vapor path and the oven chamber.
This quick and easy process is similar to the Arizer Solo in terms of convenience. Compared to other vaporizers like the Mighty or Crafty, which require a more intricate and sometimes messy cleaning routine, the Pax 2 stands out for its minimal upkeep. You’ll spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your vapor sessions.
The Stats
- Temperature Control: 370-410°F
- Warranty: 10-year warranty
- Dimensions: 3.8 inches tall, 1.2 inches wide, 0.85 inches thick
- Price: $280
These specs reinforce the Pax 2 as a solid choice for those seeking a portable vaporizer that combines compact design, ease of use, and reliable performance.
⚠️ Model Status in 2025
Pax 2 has been officially discontinued and is no longer sold. Pax Labs introduced new models: Pax Mini and Pax Plus, which have replaced the Pax 2 and Pax 3.
🔧 Updates and Improvements
Since the release of Pax 2 in 2015, Pax Labs has continued to refine its devices. New models like the Pax Mini and Pax Plus offer enhanced features, including a more compact size, improved heat insulation, and better battery efficiency.
💰 Price and Availability
Since Pax 2 is no longer in production, its price may vary depending on the seller and the condition of the device. It’s recommended to consider the newer models, such as the Pax Mini or Pax Plus, which offer modern features and improved performance.
🧼 Care and Maintenance
Caring for the Pax 2 includes regular cleaning of the mouthpiece and chamber. It is recommended to use isopropyl alcohol and soft tools for cleaning. However, given the discontinuation, it may be difficult to find original accessories and parts for maintaining the Pax 2.
Pax 2 was a popular and reliable device in its time, but with the new technologies and improvements in the Pax Mini and Pax Plus models, it is recommended to consider upgrading to a more modern device for better features and functionality.
The Bottom Line
The Pax 2 is definitely worth both your time and investment. As an upgraded version of its predecessor, this model brings numerous improvements: a better-designed mouthpiece for enhanced airflow, a longer-lasting battery, and an overall device that is incredibly easy to clean and maintain.
While it’s a fantastic choice for most users, it may not be ideal for those who require large, dense vapor clouds, especially if you’re a heavy medical marijuana user who relies on a vaporizer multiple times a day. In that case, you might find the Mighty or Crafty to be more up to your needs, as these models deliver bigger hits akin to desktop vaporizers. However, for the majority of users, Pax 2 is more than capable and will not disappoint.
