It is losing whatever stigma it ever had and still has in many parts of the country, including New York City, where the kind of open marijuana use that is common here would attract the attention of any passing law officer.Speaking from personal experience, I’ve seen pot smoked openly in just about every neighborhood in the city of San Francisco I’ve visited. Walking the streets of downtown you’ll see people openly smoking pipes and joints in alleys and behind shops. Visit hippy hill in Golden Gate Park and you will surely spot stoners smoking in plain sight, playing hacky sack and enjoying the sun, breeze and city views.
“It’s shocking, from my perspective, the number of people that we all know who are recreational marijuana users,” said Gavin Newsom, the lieutenant governor. “These are incredibly upstanding citizens: Leaders in our community, and exceptional people. Increasingly, people are willing to share how they use it and not be ashamed of it.”This is why it’s so common, attitudes here in San Francisco are open; people have a live and let live attitude here, more than any other place I’ve visited.
